Today was a huge day for the economy. U.S. companies added 243k jobs in January and the unemployment rate fell to 8.3%.

This fueled a major surge in the stock markets, which hit some major milestones.  Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq hit pre-financial crisis levels.  The Dow closed at 12,862, a 4-year high, and the Nasdaq jumped to 2,905, an 11-year high.

The S&P 500, which is arguably the best snapshot of the U.S. stock markets, hit 1,344, a 6-month high.

Facebook will file to go public tomorrow morning, IFR reports.

Facebook was expected to try and raise $10 billion, but IFR says that number has been reduced to $5 billion.

The plan is to see how that goes and possibly raise more later.

Facebook is playing a pyschological trick here, hoping to stir up demand for its stock by limiting supply.

Facebook’s expected valuation remains somewhere between $75 billion and $100 billion.

IFR says banks on the deal include: “Morgan Stanley in the coveted lead left role.Goldman Sachs, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays Capital and JP Morgan.”

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s industrial production rebounded 4 percent in December from November and household spending increased for a second month, suggesting the still-weak economy is gaining some steam after last year’s tsunami disaster and flooding in Thailand that disrupted manufacturers’ supply chains.

Output of automobiles, cell phones and semiconductors drove the gains last month after production fell 2.7 percent in November. Manufacturers project further production increases in January and February, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said Tuesday.

But Japan’s unemployment rate edged up 0.1 point to 4.6 percent in December, and Junko Nishioka, economist at RBS Japan Securities, cautioned that the economic outlook was “mixed.”

While she was heartened by the 0.5 percent uptick in family spending, Nishioka said prospects for Japan’s vital manufacturing sector remained tentative amid weak export demand. The strong yen has battered exporters like Honda Motor Corp. and Toshiba Corp., and that’s prompted more manufacturers to shift production overseas.

But one of those key export bases, Thailand, got hit by the worst floods there in five decades in October, damaging hundreds of factories and component-makers supplying Japanese manufacturers.

“The pace of recovery will be slow,” she said. “So far, we’re seeing some recovery in the auto sector and electronic components, but still it’s still not enough to compensate for the gap recorded after the March disaster and the Thai flooding.”

The industrial production data showed that shipments grew 4.5 percent and inventories fell 2.9 percent, both healthy indicators. Broadly speaking, production was led by strength in the electronics, automobile and general machinery sectors, the report showed.

Looking ahead, manufacturers predicted that industrial output would rise 2.5 percent in January and another 1.2 percent in February, according to a METI survey.

In an optimistic sign, Toyota Motor Corp. last week raised its global sales target for this year 21 percent to 8.58 million vehicles.

That’s largely based on expectations that government incentives for ecological cars will prompt more consumers to buy more of its Prius hybrid — Japan’s top-selling vehicle the last three years — and other environmentally friendly cars.

Kapost, a TechStars Boulder 2010 startup, has raised a $1.5 million Series B round of financing from CircleP, Highway 12 Ventures and High Country Venture.

Kapost is a lot like Contently, another Techstars company that announced a $2 million round last week.  Both startups help brands reinvent themselves as digital media companies.

The $1.5 million will be used to make major updates to Kapost's content management system, the first of which will be released this month.

In addition, Kapost will move beyond matching writers with traditional media companies.  It has now signed deals with major brands like L'Oreal, PTC and TripAdvisor. The brands will use Kapost to create a social media, and ultimately an entire media presence, online. 

Instead of seeing makeup reviews written by fashion bloggers, for example, L'Oreal wants to become both the makeup provider and the expert beauty voice.

The Colorado-based startup was founded by Nadar Akhnoukh (CTO), Mike Lewis (President), and Toby Murdock (CEO).

That's according to a study done by Millennial Branding. The study involved 4 million Facebook profiles of people ages 18 to 29, which had been pulled from Identified, a startup that has been billed the LinkedIn for the Facebook generation.

Another interesting finding is that only 7 percent of people in that age range work for a Fortune 500 company -- more work in startups.

Identified gave us extra data that shows which companies are most commonly listed as new employers by individuals on Facebook in 2011.

The number-one tech employer for that age group is Apple, which isn't surprising given its large retail footprint. All the companies in the top 10 are retail outlets.

That's well ahead of the $7 billion that was expected, the $7.6 billion from the month previously, and in fact, according to Dow Jones, it's the biggest expansion in a decade.

Revolving credit in November grew at a blistering 8.5% rate. Nonrevolving grew by over 10%.

New York Federal Reserve Chairman Bill Dudley expanded today on Ben Bernanke's proposals for solving the housing crisis, offering up measures to increase lending, reform the foreclosure process and address the large overhang of "shadow inventory" on banks' books.

Among his ideas:

• A "broad" program of bridge loans for qualified workers who've been laid off
• Tax incentives and neighborhood "package deals" for investors as part of the the Fed's proposed REO-to-rental program
• Expanding refinancing programs and ironing out remaining kinks in the HARP program
• Creating a "materiality test" for mortgages guaranteed by Fannie and Freddie to create more transparency on whether borrowers meet qualifications
• Mortgage subsidies for veterans

But even if the government ends up not doing anything on housing, the Fed would consider taking matters into their own hands with an additional round of easing:

"I believe it is also appropriate to continue to evaluate whether we could provide additional accommodation in a manner that produces more benefits than costs, regardless of whether action in housing is undertaken or not."

The Republican National Committee is out with a new web video this morning to continue its attempts to tie President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden to the MF Global mess.

The video is a mash-up of Obama and Biden praising Corzine, including a clip of Biden saying when he and the president "were beginning to plan how we would try to get this economy out of a ditch — literally, the first guy I called was Jon Corzine."

Biden continues: "he is the smartest guy I know on the economy and on finance — and I really mean this."

The video closes with a title screen showing "Obama-Corzine were wrong. No wonder the stimulus didn't work."

The spot is timed to coincide with Corzine's testimony before Congress today on his role in the collapse of MF Global.
